I invested a lot of time into planning the perfect camper van for me.

To design the layout I used Vectary, a free online 3D computer design tool. It is really useful as you can put in precise sizes of everything and see how all the bits you want fit together and what won’t fit.

You can see my final camper conversion design here. I seriously recommend signing up. You can have 10 designs in a free account. I experimented with different types of vans, including a Luton type van and with various different layouts.

It is incredible to see how your ideas will be in reality and figure out what fits, what goes where and to try different designs.

Lessons Learnt

It’s good to plan ahead and calculate and measure. But. It hardly ever worked out how I planned.

Weird shapes and unexpected measurements intervened. As well as new ideas.

Even the choice of van itself didn’t work out how I expected. Basing design on maximum dimensions of interior being an example.

I even planned on two skylights and bought both. But when I saw the size of the main one and where exactly to put it, the second one didn’t seem necessary. So a brand new, boxed skylight sits around idly.

So plan as much as possible, but expect to be flexible and amend your plans.
